Religious Education For The Secondary Stage

(Scientific And Literary Section)

An educational curriculum book, authored by Dr. Abdul Karim Zaidan with a group of professors (Dr. Numan Al Samarrai, Dr. Irfan Abdel Hamid, and Professor Abdul Rahman Mahmoud) in the seventies of the last century, commissioned by the Iraqi Ministry of Education at the time as a teaching course in all schools in Iraq. The book contains 142 pages and is dedicated to the final stage of secondary education, in both scientific and literary sections.

The book contains the following topics:

First : The Holy Quran (for interpretation and memorization)

In this section, the tafsir books were used: (Jami al-Bayan fi Tafsir al-Qur’an by al-Tabari, Interpretation of the Great Qur’an by Ibn Katheer, Revealing the facts of the mysterious revelations by al-Zamakhshari, Majma al-Bayan fi Tafsir al-Qur’an by al-Tabarsi, vocabulary in Gharib al-Qur’an by Abu al-Qasim al-Husayn ibn Muhammad known as Ragheb al-Isfahani Interpretation of al-Maraghi by Ahmad bin Mustafa al-Maraghi al-Maraghi, In the Shadows of the Qur’an by Sayed Qutb, The Compilation of the Rulings of the Qur’an by al-Qurtubi).

The authoring committee in this section took the following approach:

Explaining the meanings of the words contained in the verses, then, the overall meaning of the verses, then the detailed explanation of each verse, and then questions for discussion between the teacher and the students.

This section covered the following verses:

  From Surah Al-Tawbah Verses (71, 72 )

  From Surat Al-Furqan verses (63 to 70 )

From Surat Fussilat, the two verses (39,40 )

From Surah Al Imran, verse 85

From Surat Al-Buruj, from verse (1 to 10)

Second :  The Noble Prophetic Hadith (for study and memorization)

In this section, the following books of hadith were used: (Sahih al-Bukhari and his commentary by Ibn Hajar, Sahih Muslim and his commentary by al-Nawawi, The Musnad of Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal, At-Targheeb and At-Tarheeb for al-Muntheri, The Prophetic Literature of Al-Khouli, chosen from the Sunnah issued by the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs).

This section of the book covered the following hadiths:

1 Allah does not look at your bodies or at your forms, rather He looks at your hearts and deeds.

2 The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about a man who fights out of valor, a man who fights out of chauvinism, and a man who fights out of ostentation, which one fights in the cause of Allah? He replied: "Whoever fights so that the word of Allah be supreme is indeed fighting in the cause of Allah.

3 We complained to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) while he was lying in the shade of the Ka‘bah, placing his cloak under his head. We said: "Will you not supplicate for our victory (over our opponents)? Will you not invoke Allah for us?" He replied: "Among those who came before you, a man would be seized and held in a pit dug for him in the ground, and he would be sawed into two halves from his head, and his flesh would be torn away from his bones with iron combs, and none of this would turn him away from his religion. By Allah, Allah will bring this matter (Islam) to its completion until the traveler will walk from Sana'a to Hadramaut fearing none except Allah and the wolf for his sheep, but you are rushing things." In another narration: "Having made a pillow from his cloak, and we had faced much persecution from the polytheists.

4 A strong believer is better and dearer to Allah than a weak believer, and there is good in both. Adhere to whatever brings you benefit, seek the help of Allah, and do not feel helpless. If something befalls you, do not say: 'Had I done such-and-such, it would be such-and-such.' Indeed,'if' opens the way before the devil to act.

5 Do not belittle any good deed, even meeting your brother with a cheerful face.

6 A group from among the Prophet's Companions asked the Prophet's wives about the acts of worship that he performed in private. Some of them said: "I will not marry women." Others said: "I will not eat meat." Some others said: "I will not lie down on a bed." Their words reached the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). So, he praised Allah and glorified Him and said: "What is the matter with those people who said such-and-such? Indeed, I pray and I sleep too, I fast sometimes and do not fast other times, and I marry women. Whoever turns away from my Sunnah does not belong to me.

7 Indeed, the religion is easy. No one overburdens himself with the religion but he will be overwhelmed by it. So be moderate in your religion; if you can't reach perfection, try to be near to it and receive the glad tidings that you will be rewarded. Take benefit of the morning, evening, and part of the night (to worship Allah).

8 the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) made a bond of brotherhood between Salmān and Abu Ad-Dardā'. Salmān paid a visit to Abu Ad-Dardā' and found his wife, Um Ad-Dardā', dressed in a shabby manner and asked her why she was in that state. She replied: "Your brother Abu Ad-Dardā' is not interested in (the pleasures of) this world." Later, Abu Ad-Dardā' came and prepared a meal for Salmān. Salmān asked Abu Ad-Dardā' to eat with him, but Abu Ad-Dardā' said: "I am fasting." Salmān said: "I am not going to eat unless you eat." So, Abu Ad-Dardā' ate with him. When it was night, Abu Ad-Dardā' got up to offer (voluntary) night prayer, but Salmān told him to sleep and Abu Ad-Dardā' slept. After sometime, Abu Ad-Dardā' again got up to pray but Salmān told him to sleep. When it was the last hours of the night, Salmān told him to get up then, and both of them offered the prayer. Salmān told Abu Ad-Dardā', "Your Lord has a right on you, your own self has a right on you, and your family has a right on you, so give everyone their due rights." Abu Ad-Dardā' came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and narrated the whole story. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Salmān has spoken the truth.

9 “Whoever calls to guidance shall receive a reward similar to these obtained by those who follow him without that diminishing anything from their rewards. And whoever calls to misguidance shall incur a sin similar to these incurred by those who follow him without that diminishing anything from their sins.

10 By the One in Whose Hand my soul is! Either you command good and forbid evil, or Allah will soon send upon you a punishment from Him, then you will pray to Him but He will not respond to you.

11 Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O people, you recite this verse: {O you who believe, upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided.} [Sūrat al-Mā'idah: 105], but I have heard Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'When people see an oppressor but do not prevent him committing sin, it is likely that Allah will punish them all.

12 Beware of oppression, for oppression will be layers of darkness on the Day of Resurrection; and beware of stinginess, as it ruined those who were before you. It incited them to shed their blood and regard the unlawful as lawful.

13 None of you is a real believer until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.
